Types of Curtains:
Valance
Hangs in front of the front stage curtain and is made of the same material as the front stage curtain. The valance may have monograms, emblems, and fringe.
Mid Stage Traveller
Some stages have one or more curtains that can be used to make the stage shallower so that an act can be presented in front of the intermediate curtain while scene changing is done behind the curtain. This is sometimes called an opera curtain, olio curtain or mid-curtain.
Front Curtain
The curtain the audience sees when the stage is closed before performances sometimes called house curtain, act curtain, main curtain, or Grande drape.
Muslin
Muslin is a tightly woven cotton fabric used for covering of scenery as well as for bounce drops for lighting and comes in a variety of widths in several colours. Traditionally, a muslin drop, if it is to be seamed, the seams run horizontally. Muslin is also used as a canvas because it takes paint very well. Flats are often covered with muslin, then sized so that it is stretched tight. If you do not tack down muslin before you paint it, it will shrink unevenly and could cause distortion in your image.
Scrim
An open netting type of curtain. When lighted from the front it is opaque. When lighted from the back it is translucent and can be seen through. Good lighting is required to make this special effect work. More on scenery curtain fabrics.
Back and Side Curtains
The name for all the curtains behind the front curtain. Styles vary from simple curtains surrounding the acting area to multiple layers of travellers, legs, borders, and backdrops. More on back and side curtain fabrics.
Rear Curtain
The curtain at the back of the stage used to keep the audience from seeing the back wall of the stage.
Borders
These are short stage curtains to block audience view of the stage lighting and rigging. (More on sight lines.) They are sometimes called teasers, sky borders or sky valances and are usually tied to a pipe.
Cyclorama
Stage cycloramas are generally mounted at the rear of stage to give the stage a sense of depth. A cyclorama is white in colour (although sky blue or another neutral colour is occasionally used) and seamless in construction. Front or rear projection and/or colour flood lighting are often used on a cyclorama to achieve a themed or coloured effect.
Cycloramas can be mounted in a number of ways; flown, track mounted or permanently fixed in position. Therefore the construction criteria will change according to venue requirements. Traditionally bleached white “filled cloth” is used as a cyclorama fabric.
Sky Drop
A blue muslin curtain, usually behind the rear curtain, used to represent sky for outside scenes or through windows. If this backdrop curtain is made of natural coloured muslin for painting scenery on, it is called a Scenery Curtain. The Sky Drop is always flat with no pleats.
Legs
Side curtains to block audience view of the sides of the stage. These are installed parallel to the front stage curtain and sometimes include pivots.
Acoustical Curtains:
Acoustic curtains are essentially sound absorbers and are used for control of reverberation (unwanted echo). Acoustic curtains can be installed as static elements or tracked to allow for adjustment of absorption and exposure of a reflective surface behind.
Positioning, fabric weight, weave and fullness as well as spacing from reflective surfaces all effect absorption efficiency.
Typically medium to heavy weight fabrics such as wool and velvet are preferred. Acoustic curtains are generally headed at 100% fullness (and sometimes 50%). It should also be noted that acoustic curtains are more effective within a certain frequency range; typically 500 -2000Hz (peaking at around 1000Hz).
Room Dividing Curtains:
Room dividing curtains allows easy partitioning of space. These curtains create an easy and convenient way to transform any space for privacy or as a sound barrier. With this solution, offices can be divided and large rooms can be quickly transformed to meet different uses.
Stage Curtain Track System:
This tracking system can be used for long drop theatre curtains; both main and masking. As cyclorama and studio perimeter track, with accessories such as switch (point) units and drop-out sections available. Rear fold running gear is available for cinema masking. Series 18 track system is available with standard bends or can be supplied in any nominated radius above 600mm. Continuous long radius bends can be supplied to suit curved prosceniums or cycloramas.
